At its best, DeMarco’s music sounds like it’s from a pocket dimension whose rock music never evolved past Steely Dan, or a misremembered swath of the ’70s. It’s the best example of DeMarco’s strange time-hopping shenanigans. “Another One” has a strange, warm feeling of nostalgia buried in the surfy chords. Like the best tracks on Salad Days, “Passing Out Pieces” and “Chamber of Reflection,” Mac’s keyboard is the main focus, and his old, odd Casio throwaway is just as unique as his toy guitar. “Another One” has a video including DeMarco messing around on a beach in a Michael Jackson mask, but there’s no denying how damn sad the song is. The title track both sums up DeMarco’s new mindset and serves as the finest song here. It is a lovely ambient piece devoid of vocals (outside of his parting words), and before that, “Without Me,” is a faded out track, nearly whispered in quality and volume. Mac wades into more interesting waters with closer “My House by the Water” (in which DeMarco gives out his home address, no seriously). “The Way You’d Love Her” is still in the classic Mac vein as well, but his guitar work seems to be dissolving at the edges, further cementing the sea-sick feeling of the song. It’s one of the most genuine feeling songs DeMarco has penned, thanks to his steadfast conviction when he sings “ Come on give this lover boy a try.” Corny? No doubt, but that’s part of DeMarco’s go-to shtick, and he pulls it off with aplomb. “I’ve Been Waiting for Her” in particular feels like a toss-away b-side from Salad Days. Sleeper hit “Vicroy” had DeMarco declaring he’d smoke the titular cigarettes “ ‘til I’m dying,”and Salad Days held a clutch of more somber meditations on lost love and personal failings, most obviously on “Passing Out Pieces” and “Brother.” But Another One goes much deeper, relying on DeMarco’s undernoted piano skills and ability to create some warped out ambience.Ĭertainly, old school DeMarco fans will find plenty to be happy about with songs like the jumpy “I’ve Been Waiting for Her” and the goofball ballad “No Other Heart,” but these are undoubtedly the weakest moments of Another One. “ Must be another one…she loves.” What once was a cheeky joke becomes DeMarco’s most tear-stained song yet.

But the title track is actually only part of a sentence. Another One could refer to the fact that, since about 2011, DeMarco’s been on a tear of touring and recording. The title itself, at first, seems to be DeMarco’s nod to his own constant output. Another One has the usual brushes of DeMarco’s work – his soft croon, wayward guitars and goofy choruses – but it’s all tinged with a palpable heartache. Perhaps it’s not a shock then that current clown prince of slackerdom, Mac DeMarco, has finally made his bluest release.

As the brilliant and harrowing Cracked article “ Robin Williams and Why Funny People Kill Themselves” pointed out, it’s often our finest jokers who hold the most sorrow. From Smokey Robinson’s “Tears of a Clown” to one of the most haunting lines in Alan Moore’s Watchmen, Ruggero Leoncavallo’s tale of a clown who can only find depression has become a touchstone of sorts. The great opera Pagliacci has had some surprising reverberations in pop culture since its 1892 debut.
